Wonderflex Crown

Posted on March 10, 2026 by admin

I started off looking at the picture and trying to figure out the design. I had decided that there were circular detailing on the main part of the crown and that it was about a third of the base tall at the band.

I cut out the pieces in foam and placed pieces to make sure that they fit, and taped it all together for the mock up. This is where I made my biggest mistake, and did not account for the depth of the foam, so it did not fit properly.

I then removed the details in order to apply the wonderflex. Applying it, I quickly found out how temperamental it could be. I would end up taking off the spires and putting the wonderflex on them separately, then attached them and used scraps to fill in any gaps. I really like how mendable the wonderflex is in that sense.

I then attached the wooden balls, painted, and put felt on the inside. I wish that I had not felted the spires, but other than that, I like how it looks. I think there is a good dimensionality to the painting, which is a large improvement from my last crown.

I wish I had practiced with wonderflex more because I think I overheated it, giving it a more grainy texture that is visible on my crown.

If I could do this again I think I would not felt the spires and would use a thinner foam. Though I like the thickness of it, it did not fit properly.
